Guest lecture as part of the lecture "The 20th Century - An architectural (hi)story told by twelve buildings"

The pilgrimage church Maria Königin des Friedens in Velbert-Neviges (1966-68) is probably the best known and most significant church building of the architect Gottfried Böhm (*1920). Nevertheless, a detailed and in-depth architectural, constructive as well as architectural and church-historical examination of this building, which arouses numerous associations, has been lacking until now.

Dr. Steffen Kunkel has addressed this desideratum in his recently completed, comprehensive dissertation and examined the building in detail with the architect's eye. We are therefore delighted to have been able to engage him as a guest lecturer as part of the lecture series "The 20th Century - An architectural (hi)story told by twelve buildings".

Steffen Kunkel is an architect, photographer, designer and, since 2017, a research associate at the Chair of Building Theory at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He wrote his doctoral thesis on the pilgrimage church "Maria, Königin des Friedens" built by Gottfried Böhm in Neviges.
Since 2016, he has been working in collaboration with the Basel architect Eleni Zaparta in the field of social housing and education. From 2014 to 2017 he taught at the chairs of Design and Industrial Methods of Building Construction and Design and Building Theory at the Technical University of Darmstadt. From 2004 to 2013 he studied Visual Communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach am Main and Architecture and Urban Design at the Technische Universität in Darmstadt. Various works have been featured in the daily press, publications and exhibitions; he has also lectured at various universities and museums.

All members of the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University will receive an invitation with a zoom link by e-mail in the course of January.
External interested parties have the possibility to register informally for the lecture via email to until January 24, 2021 and will receive the Zoom link on the day of the event.
