Urban Development in Turin - Continuity and Transformation

Cities are built places of memory. They record history in a materialized way in form of buildings, streets and squares. When cities can be read, they reveal the centuries of their existence to the attentive observer. But they are also places of constant change that blur the traces of time. They provide information about morphology, development and growth, especially when the existing is so carefully architecturally continued as in Turin.

In the context of his guest lecture "Urban Development in Turin - Continuity and Transformation" (de), Dr. Thomas Wilke, a proven expert on the city, will trace the most important stages in Turin's 2000-year history. Referring to the book Turin. Die Erfindung der Hauptstadt - Frühbarocke Stadtplanung der Herzöge von Savoyen (de), that he has published together with Stephan Albrecht, he will precisely illustrate the single steps from the Roman city foundation to Turin's ascent to a residential city as well as the city expansions of the 19th century.
