Terroir Mosel – Extension of a Winery in the Vernacular Context of the Monument Zone in Ediger-Eller

In the middle of the narrow and historic village center of Ediger-Eller lies the Haupts family winery, which cultivates about three hectares of vineyards. The building ensemble includes three landmarked timber frame buildings from the 16th century as well as three adjacent buildings that are used for storage and as garages. The upper floors of the timber frame houses are used as private apartments or for guest rooms. While grouped around a central courtyard, they are all integrated into the operations of the winery.
Due to the structural change of the wineries in the Mosel region, the existing production grows annually, which means that the existing small-scale production rooms in the narrow village center are no longer sufficient. In addition, the winery is about to undergo a generational change, so that in addition to a necessary expansion of the inventory, the idea of restructuring is also on the agenda. In order to optimize the operational processes, to place the product wine more in the center and to enhance and stage the historical building substance of the ensemble, the production facility will be separated from the sales location. The latter will be complemented by the construction of a new hostel.
The priority is to fit into the historically grown village center and to complement the landmarked ensemble in a meaningful way. The two existing residential buildings are therefore juxtaposed with another building, which also functions as a hostel, in addition to the existing guesthouse. It takes up elements of the guest house such as the cubature, the base, the openings, gable roof, etc. and thus represents a counterpart to the existing building. By using rammed earth on a visible concrete base, the new building blends in and at the same time sets itself apart from the existing materiality of the surrounding buildings.
A public passageway, which can always be traversed, connects the two alleys that surround the winery. This passage is complemented by the exhibition of products, equipment and information panels related to viticulture. The courtyard, located between the existing building and the new one, and connected to the passage, serves as a distributor from which the individual rooms of the sales, presentation, tasting and bar are accessible.
