FR | Architectural Guide: Protestant Churches in Aachen

Christuskirche Aachen © Norbert Schnitzler (mod.)

Due to the small protestant community in Aachen until the mid-19th century, there were only two protest churches in the city, the Annakirche and the historical Dreifaltigkeitskirche. However, since the end of World War II, the number of community members has strongly increased, making it necessary to build new churches in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The present research field is concerned with protestant churches built within the last 60 years, from the Auferstehungskirche built in 1962/63 to the Genezareth-Kirche at Vaalser Straße, which is soon to be completed.

The overarching goal of our activities is to create an architectural guide to the 20th century protestant churches in Aachen. This project will be conducted in close collaboration with the Protestant Church Community in Aachen. This guide will also draw on the research activities of a student within a past research field project.

Participants have the opportunity to form teams of two or three people to work on two or three churches built within the same decade. The goal is to identify commonalities and differences between these churches.
