M2.2 | From Building Survey to Building Idea
As an alternative to the classical design project, the chair is once again offering a scientific project, this time conceived as a two-semester event dedicated to the Imperial Abbey of Kornelimünster.
At the beginning of the project there will be a one-week on-site building survey campaign, during which you will make a survey of the building as part of the overall group and during which you will be systematically introduced to the methods of historical building research. On this basis you will then develop your own research question, which you will pursue further in the rest of the winter semester in individual work or in groups of two, and the results of which you will present in the form of a written paper. In the supplementary module the methods of scientific work will be taught.
In the summer semester, you will then develop strategies for the museum use of the building complex, which will spatially develop the Kunsthaus NRW, which is already housed in parts of the convent wings, and link the presentation of the state's collection of modern art with the presentation of the building. On the other hand, on the basis of the results of the winter semester, you will design an exhibition that will give visitors to the Kunsthaus a concrete understanding of the architecture and history of the Imperial Abbey of Kornelimünster.
The M2 project started in the winter term 2018/19 and will be continued in the current summer term.
