As an alternative to a traditional design assignment, the chair offers a project that combines object-oriented scholarly research, the development of strategies for the presentation of matters of architectural history and the actual design of exhibition settings into one comprehensive course.

In the first part of the class, in a research paper based both on textual and pictorial sources and on the actual fabric of the buildings you will examine the old Abbey of Kornelimünster as a setting for the worship of Charlemagne's imperial relics and compare the ensemble with other early modern sites that aim to represent the idea of the Holy Roman Empire. In parallel, you will develop the general concept for an exhibition hall that complements the existing ensemble in front of the baroque forecourt, thus enabling the kunsthaus nrw housed in the abbey buildings to also display its holdings outside of the historical premises. In all of this, the balance between research and design tasks can be adapted to the development of the Corona crisis as needed.

In the course of the winter semester, you will then transform your research findings into an actual exhibition that, on the occasion of the anniversary of the baroque abbey buildings in the coming year, will illuminate the abbey's history from a variety of perspectives and which in collaboration with the kunsthaus you will have the opportunity to design and practically implement.
