B4 | The House on the Corner

The project deals with with the complex task of building a corner house. Within perimeter blocks, the bourgeois architecture of the Gründerzeit had a predilection for corner buildings featuring elaborate turrets.

In the modernist era, in particular between 1960 and the early 1980s, corner buildings are typically undifferentiated, inconspicuous standard solutions that do not live up to the opportunities provided by their prominent position but just continue with the repetition of the normative series.

The objective of the B4 project is to create a corner building situated on one of two pre-selected plots in Aachen between the Frankenberg Quarter and Elisenbrunnen. Depending on the local context of the plot, participants can choose between a range functions - ranging from residential and/or commercial buildings to small hotels with a public café and the like. The definitive use of the building will therefore have to be developed in close coordination with their supervisors.
