EM | Monastic architecture in the 20th and 21st centuries

Eine innere Ordnung wird als äußere Ordnung sichtbar. […] jedes gute Kloster stellt einen Organismus dar, durch den das Leben nach der Regel zuerst ermöglicht, dann rationalisiert, zuletzt symbolisiert wird." Against this background, we will look at selected monastery buildings erected in the 20th and 21st centuries – the Dominican monastery of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette by Le Corbusier and the Cistercian monastery in Nový Dvůr by John Pawson are probably among the best known – and examine the extent to which they still reflect the rules of the order and building programmes that were often consolidated in the early days of the various orders.
