M1 | Futur[AHR]

The flood disaster in July 2021 left far-reaching damage in the villages along the river Ahr in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate and changed the landscape of the Ahr Valley in a previously unimagined way within one day. Since then, those responsible on site have been faced with the challenging task of developing a long-term sustainable concept for restoring the region and making it habitable and attractive for tourists again.

The design project will initially record four distinctive villages along the course of the Ahr – Altenahr, Mayschoss, Rech and Dernau – in terms of landscape as well as architectural history, so that a culturally and historically sustainable perspective for the future can then be designed. The basis for this is the results of a first project seminar in the winter semester 2021/22, which undertook a systematic investigation of the Ahr Valley with regard to the architectural-historical inventory and the identity-forming elements and characteristics of the villages and towns, which will now be concretized by site-specific conceptual designs.

The task will be worked on in groups of two and pursues the goal of an exhibition and presentation of the results on site in the Ahr Valley at the end of the design project.
