EM | Bofill in a box
In this seminar we will explore the both peculiar and fascinating oeuvre of the recently deceased Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill and his "Taller de Arquitectura".
We will be introduced to buildings that could not be more contrasting each other: Brick-faced apartment buildings in 1960s Barcelona – nested, sometimes fractal-like residential complexes of the 1970s, inspired by Archigram's Plug-In City and at the same time dedicated to the spirit of critical regionalism – Neo-Modernist ensembles of the 1980s, which have repeatedly served as film sets and some of which are already considered icons of postmodernism.
In a first step, you will approach the building you have chosen in the form of a short impulse lecture. In a second step, you will develop an architectural box – inspired by the famous boîtes-en-valise of the conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp – by which you will represent your building and make its special characteristics perceptible and experienceable for yourself, but also for third persons.
We will regard the conception, the filling, the mechanics and the production of the box as specific methods and tools for the comprehension and communication of the building. The course concludes with a joint unboxing.
