The current archival uncovering of the identity of thousands of victims of the Secret State Police in the administrative district of Aachen is the shattering occasion to now also publicly commemorate the people who were persecuted, tortured and murdered in Aachen in the name of National Socialism.
So far, the reappraisal of the injustice in Aachen has focused on the scientific investigation of individual cases and, as a follow-up, on a broad public clarification of the proven crimes, which have been marked with 43 so-called "Stolpersteine" at the locations in the city where the crimes actually took place. With these valuable works, however, only a relatively small number of well-documented fates could be remembered.
In view of the more than 10,500 victims of the crimes against humanity only in the administrative district of Aachen, which were centrally planned by the Gestapo from the administrative district headquarters on Theaterplatz and carried out with police violence in the adjacent Borngasse, consideration is now being given beyond another "Stolperstein" to a central memorial in the backyards of the former district administration buildings. In addition, an institution for youth and adult education is to be established, which will scientifically uncover the background of state-organized crime in the context of the historically burdened site and present it to the public.
