The lecture cycle of the first semester provides a chronological overview of the periods of architectural history from Greek antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages.

The lectures thereby use a predominantly typological approach, i.e. they present the most important building types of an era in exemplary fashion, explain their conditions of origin and their historical purpose, and examine their architectural form according to ideal types and regional variations. Moreover, the presentation of the various examples will also serve to introduce and explain the most important items of architectural terminology.

The module finishes in the second semester with the written examination "Cultural and Historical Basics I" together with the Chair of Art History and the Chair of Architectural Theory.
