EX | Academic Practice

Student doing research in the library © Tobias Glitsch

How does one write scholarly texts correctly and intelligibly? What are the formal requirements? How are sources identified and cited? How does one go about conceiving and answering a research question? What is research anyway and what are the different research disciplines within the overall field of architecture? What methods does one use to collect one's own information? And how does one present one's research to others?

The module "Academic Practice", jointly organized by the departments of Architectural History, Building Technology, Healthy Living Spaces, History of Art, Housing, and Real Estate Development, will not only provide answers to all these questions but also offer you a chance to experiment with what you have learnt. To this end, the course begins with a sequence of lectures in which – regardless of which department you are assigned to – you will get to know the basic concepts of research, as well as the range of research activities at our faculty. At your respective Chair you will then write a small proposal for a research project of your choice, in which you will outline a problem, formulate specific questions to guide your research, suggest an appropriate methodological approach, and practice the proper citation of the sources you have used. At the end, the results from the individual groups will once again be brought together across the departments in a final joint session.
