FR | Paths to the Periphery – Architecture in Dialogue with the Landscape
The periphery of the city comprises peripheral areas with various functions outsourced out of the centre, for which the town cannot offer a central place. The urban periphery therefore connects functionally with the city centre as far as the city's economy allows. Beyond, the paths and roads begin into a more rural periphery, which, situated between the metropolises, can offer the place for a quiet stay, as far as there is the willingness to pause. Structural change in the Rhenish coal mining area is taking place in the midst of these peripheries of roadside villages and remaining natural spaces. The research field examines different concepts of sustainable structural change on the basis of concrete examples.
