S | Facades – Concepts and Strategies

Façades of high-rise Residential Buildings in New York © Bruno Schindler

Buildings present themselves to the observer with facades. As a building envelope, the facade creates architecture in front of the constructive and protective elements of the building.

In the focus seminar, various methods of facade formation are analysed and updated using historical examples. The seminar begins with a series of introductory lectures and exercises that teach the basic architectural material of traditional facade architecture.

With the subsequent contributions of the students on facades in the history of architecture, the gradual development to contemporary facade formation is to be elaborated, which will finally lead to a practical project work.
