FR | The Marian chapel of St. Matthias in Trier
The Lady Chapel in the churchyard of the benedictine abbey of St. Matthias at Trier is one of the oldest examples for a mere gothic style in German speaking lands. Despite of that fact, it is almost unknown. Even though it is not only an early representative of the gothic style but also noteworthy because of its typology – a three-bay single-nave church with two opposite 5/8-polygons.
Reasons for the scholary disregard of the chapel might be the fragmentary condition in which it is preserved and the restricted accessibility. Aim of this field of research is a graphic reconstruction of the original appearance of the chapel on the basis of older plans as well as on own measurements – if possible. Furthermore it is necessary to analyse the historical backgrounds and motivations for choosing style and type.
