An exhibition contribution at kunsthaus nrw

This summer's flood events caused major damage in Kornelimünster. The exceptionally long-lasting heavy rainfalls finally led to the emergency evacuation of the historic settlement area around the old abbey and Korneliusmarkt on July 14, 2021. These events not only worried the residents, but also caused concern and consternation among all friends of the picturesque village. The centuries-old symbiosis of the abbey, the Inde River and the traditional settlement in the valley is severely endangered.

Bruno Schindler has taken up the special advantages of the topography above and below the village and developed a scenario of how Kornelimünster could be protected with relatively flat but widely extended flood retention areas. By illustrative drawings and photographs, he developed a flood protection concept operating with only minimal intervention in the traditional cultural landscape and thus contributing to its preservation. Such a flood protection scenario for Kornelimünster could serve as a model for other localities in the vicinity by identifying and utilizing further existing retention potentials, thus forming the beginning of an integral protection concept for the Inde Valley.

The local kunsthaus nrw acts as an open forum for new ideas on local flood protection and shows the works of Bruno Schindler (de) in the period from November 12, 2021 to February 27, 2022.
